Currently children in Erie are provided breakfast and lunch at school; however, many children have little to no food available to them when they go home in the evenings and over the weekends. In Pennsylvania 1 in 6 children struggle with hunger, and in the city of Erie there are areas where that number is significantly higher. We at meterEZ find this unacceptable. We feel that the real way to combat poverty is ensuring that children have nourished bodies and minds ready for the school day.

MeterEZ has partnered with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania to tackle this problem, and provide meals to children in Erie with food scarcity issues. We are working directly with Second Harvest to fund current programs that help provide food directly to those kids who need it most right here in Erie. That's right, all of the money stays right here in our community.

The Programs

Second Harvest has two specific programs that provide food to kids outside of school, when the need is greatest. 100% of our funds will be going to these programs.

  • Second Harvest Backpack Program: This program provides children with nutritious, child-friendly food when other resources, such as school lunches and after-school meals or snacks, are not available. Backpacks are discreetly distributed to participating children at schools on Fridays.
  • Second Harvest School Pantry Program: Second Harvest Food Bank has started a pilot food pantry in Edison Elementary School. This program provides an opportunity for children to take food home with them.

The Match Fund

We have also created a matching fund contributed to by meterEZ, WeCreate and anonymous donors. This fund will help offset processing costs as well as match as much as possible funds donated by meterEZ App users. The match fund is a growing number that is currently in the thousands, and the final numbers will be announced in mid January. "We feel a need to be actively involved in the city we operate in, as our home town and as a general social responsibility. And, ensuring kids in our community have food to eat is of paramount importance." -James Moelk, CEO.

The fundraising will begin in Early December and run into Early January. MeterEZ App users will be prompted to give a donation when they park. Donations can be as little as .25 and up. Additionally, donations can be made here: https://www.meterez.com/give
